Green homes in today’s concept are residences with eco-friendly features, energy efficient, and most important of all, with residents who follow or practice green or environmentally sound lifestyles. A house can be officially declared by proper authorities as a “green home” but people do not really need an official recognition in order to live in a house that helps in saving the environment. There are plenty of benefits that household can get when living in “green homes” that is why those who are planning of moving house or building one should take into account eco-friendly features in their decisions.

A green home will not look like the house of the future. In fact, most of these will look like ordinary or standard houses that you regularly see. The differences are found in the various features and designs, which make the house energy efficient, use less water, create less waste, and healthy and clean for the household members.

Existing homes can install green technology like solar panels or wind turbines to generate electricity and significantly lessen their dependencies to conventional energy sources. Meanwhile, proper insulation and air sealing will keep heating and cooling costs lower, while efficient windows, appliances, and lighting will lower electricity bills. A green home will also increase the value of the property in the future.

There are also health benefits when living in green homes like toxin-free building materials, utilize natural ventilation, and less problems with molds and mildews. Green homes also uses fewer natural resources since many of the materials used can be recycled.

A green lifestyle should be maintained as well in order to keep the benefits of environment-friendly residences.  The practice will involve reducing the amount of items bough and consume including electricity, fuel and water. Next, is to reuse items, which could result to extending their usefulness and eliminate the need to put them in a landfill.

Lastly is by recycling, which will reduce the need to grow or extract raw materials and save the energy needed to make the products and the fuel required to distribute them.  Recycling is different from reuse since this involved making new product out of recycled materials while reuse is using products for the same purpose they are intended to be used.
